Technology Works!

November 10, 2008

I have one friend who swears that she owes her family meals to her slow cooker. Before she leaves for work in the morning, she throws in some cut-up meat and vegetables, sprinkles the mix with a few spices, then leaves for the day. Sometimes she goes vegetarian, with or without beans.

When she gets home at the end of the day, her house smells like a home is supposed to, because her trusty appliance, like my friend, has spent the day hard at work.

I have another friend who takes it one step further. She lives in thrall her bread maker. So what if the loaves come out square? The aroma of baking bread puts the aroma of beef stew to shame.

I think: what if I introduced these two friends? Would they each begin running two machines a day? And how wonderful would their kitchens smell; how terrific would their suppers be?

We often complain about how technology has pushed us apart. How about the ways it pulls us together? Add a fresh green salad, a hungry family, and presto! Magic! You have a meal.
